The Giant ‘Washing Machine’ Saving Hash Makers Thousands Daily
Industrial-Scale Hash Production: Low Temp Industries’ Osprey Revolutionizes Solventless Extraction
In an industry increasingly demanding solventless cannabis products, producing high-quality hash on a large scale requires both delicate handling of plant material and streamlined, efficient processes. This need has made the traditional art of Hashishin—small-batch, hands-on hash production—challenging to sustain in larger operations. However, Low Temp Industries (LTI) is changing the game with its flagship product, the Osprey hash washing machine, designed to balance precision and efficiency for industrial-scale cannabis extraction.
In an exclusive interview with Benzinga Cannabis, Cliff Haney, marketing director at Low Temp Industries, detailed how the Osprey enables operators to produce artisanal-quality hash while processing up to 80,000 grams of fresh-frozen cannabis per day.
So Fresh and So Clean: The Appeal of Solventless Extraction
Solventless extraction is becoming the preferred method for cannabis processors and consumers due to its cleaner, chemical-free approach. The Osprey hash washing machine is engineered to streamline this solventless extraction process for large-scale cannabis operators.
“The Osprey is geared for MSOs (Multi-State Operators) and commercial extraction facilities focused on solventless techniques,” Haney explained. Capable of handling up to 80,000 grams of fresh-frozen cannabis per day, the machine is essential for operations looking to scale production while maintaining product quality.
Haney emphasized the machine’s efficiency: “It can handle 20,000 grams of fresh-frozen cannabis per batch, and operators can run four batches within an eight-hour workday. Yield percentages depend on the strain being processed, typically ranging between three and six percent from fresh-frozen cannabis, which weighs about four to five times more than dried flower.”
It’s Simple: User-Friendly Features for Hash Makers
A key differentiator of the Osprey, according to Haney, is its simplicity and ease of use. “We built the Osprey from the ground up to make the extraction process as simple as possible for hash makers,” he said.
Unlike other systems that use blades or high-contact methods, the Osprey features a low-shear impeller, which provides a gentler wash, resulting in cleaner hash with fewer contaminants. This innovation ensures that operators can maintain the delicate balance required for high-quality hash production without compromising efficiency.
The machine also includes an auto-sieve system, which eliminates the need for labor-intensive manual bag pulling—a task traditionally associated with hash-making. “With just a foot pedal, operators can vibrate the water out of the hash, reducing strain on workers and improving workflow efficiency,” Haney added.
Built for Commercial Use and Compliance
The Osprey is built with commercial-scale cannabis operations in mind, adhering to stringent regulatory requirements. Constructed from stainless steel, it ensures durability and compliance with food-grade processing standards, addressing concerns about microplastics contaminating hash—a growing issue in the cannabis industry.
“The Osprey is equipped with a UL-listed control panel, making compliance checks in different states much easier,” Haney said. He further noted that operators do not need a C1D1 room for solventless extraction, which simplifies inspections and reduces operational costs for cannabis extraction facilities.
Scalable Solutions: The Mini Osprey for Smaller Operations
While the Osprey is designed for large cannabis companies, LTI has also developed a smaller version, the Mini Osprey, for mid-sized and smaller operations. This scalable solution allows smaller businesses to enhance efficiency without sacrificing product quality.
Haney explained that the Mini Osprey offers similar features to its larger counterpart. “It’s about simplifying the process so hash makers can focus on quality rather than tedious manual tasks,” he said. Operators can customize the machine’s settings based on the type of product they’re creating, from high-quality full melt hash to edibles.
“You can adjust the machine’s speed and time settings depending on the strain and product you want to make. For full melt, you go slow and gentle. For edibles, you can increase the speed and get as much as you can from the material,” Haney noted.
The Secret Recipe: Pre-Programmed for Precision
One of the standout features of the Osprey is its ability to pre-program specific extraction recipes, streamlining the process and ensuring consistent results. “You can build your recipes on the Osprey itself because some strains and cultivars have different shaped trichome heads that detach more easily than others,” Haney explained.
This customization feature allows operators to adjust variables like speed, duration, and temperature based on the strain they’re working with and the desired end product, whether it’s full-spectrum rosin, edibles, or full melt hash. The ability to pre-program recipes helps operators maintain consistent quality across multiple batches, a critical factor for large-scale cannabis operations.
Plug and Play: Easy Setup and Accessibility
For cannabis investors and operators, the Osprey offers ease of use right out of the box. “The machine arrives nearly ready to use, requiring minimal assembly before it’s plugged into a standard 110-volt outlet,” Haney said. Unlike many industrial machines, the Osprey doesn’t require compressed air, making it a highly accessible and cost-efficient option for commercial cannabis operations.
Disrupting Packaging with the Concentrate Dispenser
In addition to the Osprey, Low Temp Industries is also innovating in cannabis packaging with its concentrate dispenser, a device designed to automate the packaging process for products like live resin and rosin. The concentrate dispenser can package between 400 and 1,000 grams per hour, significantly reducing labor costs in extraction facilities where manual packaging is the norm.
“Most companies have around 10 people packaging by hand in the extraction lab. Our concentrate dispenser automates the process, featuring an intep-certified integrated scale to ensure each gram or two-gram bucket is perfectly weighed and dispensed,” Haney explained.
By automating the packaging process, LTI’s concentrate dispenser not only improves efficiency but also helps companies maintain consistency in product dosing—a crucial factor in regulated cannabis markets.
The Future of Large-Scale Solventless Extraction
With innovations like the Osprey hash washing machine and the concentrate dispenser, Low Temp Industries is at the forefront of scaling up solventless cannabis extraction. By simplifying the extraction and packaging processes, LTI is helping both large-scale operators and smaller businesses produce high-quality hash and cannabis extracts more efficiently than ever before.
As the demand for solventless products continues to rise, solutions like the Osprey are becoming critical assets for cannabis companies looking to scale production while maintaining artisanal quality.
