Kentucky has commenced the application process for cannabis business licenses, marking a significant step forward in implementing its medical marijuana program. Legislative Background

In 2023, Kentucky lawmakers legalized medical marijuana for residents grappling with chronic illnesses. Qualifying patients, including those with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cancer, are slated to begin applying for cannabis cards starting January 1.

Application Details

Applications for cannabis business licenses are now open and will continue to be accepted until August 31, 2024. The state plans to distribute a limited number of licenses across various sectors, using a lottery system to ensure fairness. Specifically, Kentucky will issue 48 dispensary licenses across 11 regions, 10 licenses for processors, and 16 licenses for cultivators.

Governor Andy Beshear anticipates announcing lottery winners in October. Speaking in April, he emphasized that the lottery system aims to level the playing field and prevent larger corporations from dominating the market.
