Tallahassee-Based Cannabis Giant Doubles Down on Recreational Cannabis Efforts Despite Previous Setback
Trulieve Cannabis Corp. is once again heavily investing in the push for adult-use marijuana legalization in Florida, contributing a significant $19.6 million to the Smart & Safe Florida campaign committee. This latest donation aims to help place recreational cannabis on the 2026 ballot, signaling the company’s ongoing commitment to cannabis reform in the state.
Previous Effort to Legalize Adult-Use Cannabis Fell Short Despite Significant Investment
This latest round of contributions follows a massive $150 million that Trulieve had spent in an attempt to legalize adult-use cannabis in Florida during a previous campaign. While a majority of voters—56%—supported Amendment 3 in November, Florida law requires more than 60% voter approval to pass a constitutional amendment. The failure of this campaign led to a total investment of nearly $164 million by Trulieve in legalization efforts over the past few years.
Legal Challenges and Fines for Smart & Safe Florida’s Campaign Efforts
Despite the financial backing from Trulieve, the Smart & Safe Florida campaign, which resumed its adult-use legalization efforts in January 2025, faced challenges with state campaign laws. In March 2025, the campaign was fined $121,850 by elections officials for alleged breaches of state law, which may complicate the path forward for legalization efforts.
Trulieve Dominates Florida’s Cannabis Market
Trulieve remains the dominant cannabis operator in Florida, with 163 retail locations spread across the state. Florida, which currently has the largest medical marijuana-only market in the country, has seen increased competition as operators like Trulieve continue to push for the expansion of recreational cannabis, despite setbacks in the legislative process.
As the state prepares for another attempt to legalize adult-use marijuana, Trulieve’s substantial financial support underscores the company’s deep commitment to shaping Florida’s cannabis future.
