Health Canada Expands Recall for Cannabis Extracts Due to Incorrect THC Levels
Health Canada has announced a major expansion of its recall for cannabis extract products sold by iNaturally Organic Inc., citing incorrect THC values on product labels. This expanded recall affects more than 17,000 units of various cannabis extract products distributed across several Canadian provinces and territories.
Products Affected
The recall applies to three specific product lines:
- Emprise CBN+CBD Softgels
- NuLeaf Naturals Full Spectrum Hemp Multicannabinoid Oil and Softgels
- Ultra Plus MultiCannabinoid Oil and Softgels
These products were sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Yukon between December 2022 and July 2024.
Reasons for the Recall
According to Health Canada, the recalled products contain higher concentrations of THC and the intoxicating cannabinoid hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) than indicated on their labels. The issue stems from the use of a “less than” sign on the labels, which may have led consumers to believe that the products contain negligible amounts of THC, potentially misleading them about the potency and effects of the products.
Health Risks and Consumer Advice
Health Canada warns that consuming these products could pose serious health risks, especially in situations requiring full alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery. The unanticipated high levels of THC and HHC can lead to cannabis poisoning, which may result in symptoms like chest pain, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, psychotic episodes, respiratory depression, severe anxiety, or panic attacks.
The agency advises consumers to immediately cease use of the affected products and either return them to the retailer or dispose of them safely. Opened products should be discarded in a manner that keeps them out of reach of children.
Company Response and Reports of Adverse Reactions
In response to the recall, iNaturally Organic Inc. has voluntarily initiated the recall process for the affected products. To date, the company has received two reports of adverse reactions related to the recalled products. Health Canada has logged five such reports.
Previous Recall and Further Actions
This recall expands upon a smaller-scale recall issued by Health Canada in June for a limited selection of iNaturally Organic Inc. products. The expanded recall underscores the importance of accurate product labeling and consumer safety in the cannabis industry.
For further information and guidance, consumers are encouraged to contact Health Canada or the retailer from whom the products were purchased.
