Loss Ratio

Loss ratio represents the percentage of insurance premium used to pay claims during a specific period. It is calculated by dividing incurred losses by total premium.

Why It Matters
Loss ratio is a primary indicator of risk performance. In captive insurance programs, lower loss ratios can result in retained underwriting profit rather than lost premium.

Example
A 35% loss ratio on a $500,000 premium equals $175,000 in claims.
