As festival season kicks off, a recent study delves into the prevalent drug consumption habits of attendees, shedding light on trends and safety measures.
Overview of the Study: 87% of Attendees Plan Drug Use
The Drug Safety at Music Festivals study, conducted by Innerbody, surveyed 900 individuals, revealing that a significant 87% of festival-goers plan to consume drugs during this year’s events, marking a 10% increase from the previous year.
Popular Festival Drugs and Most Anticipated Events
Cannabis emerges as the primary choice among festival-goers, followed by substances like cocaine, psychedelics, and MDMA. Rock, hip-hop, and EDM festivals are noted for having the most drug-influenced audiences, with Wisconsin’s Rock Fest and Nevada’s Burning Man topping the list of events with anticipated drug use.
Drug Concealment, Consumption, and Testing Behaviors
While about a third of attendees bring their own drugs, the majority opt to purchase them at the festival. However, there’s been an increase in drug testing awareness, with 80.3% of respondents indicating they test their drugs before the event. Common concealment methods include backpacks and pockets, with drug consumption occurring within the crowd, restrooms, or outside festival gates.
Health Issues and Risky Behavior
More than half of participants reported health-related issues requiring medical attention while under the influence, including heat stroke and dehydration. The study also highlights the correlation between drug use and risky behavior, such as engaging in unsafe sex and dangerous driving post-event.
Harm Reduction Strategies
The study underscores the importance of harm reduction strategies, emphasizing drug testing, self-education, and starting with low dosages. Additionally, staying aware of surroundings, remaining close to friends, and familiarizing oneself with medical tents are practical ways to enhance safety at music festivals.
As festival-goers gear up for a summer of music and celebration, understanding drug consumption trends and implementing harm reduction strategies can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience for all.
