Harrison Bard: The Race to the Bottom in Pre-Roll Markets

Cannabis Industry Faces Challenges and Innovations: Insights from Harrison Bard on Pre-Rolls, Partnerships, and Science

Harrison Bard, co-founder and CEO of Custom Cones USA and DaySavers, shared key insights into the evolving landscape of the cannabis industry, particularly focusing on the pre-roll market, innovative partnerships, and ongoing scientific research.

Pre-Roll Market Dynamics

Bard discussed the current state of the pre-roll market, particularly highlighting a “race to the bottom” in regions like Michigan, where companies are producing cheaper pre-rolls to gain market share. He predicts, however, that as the market matures, there will be a shift towards higher quality products and stabilized pricing. The focus is expected to move from cost-cutting to ensuring better quality in pre-roll products, emphasizing consistency and uniformity, which remain persistent challenges in the industry.

Manufacturing Challenges

One of the critical issues Bard identified in the manufacturing of pre-rolls is the closing and finishing process, which he describes as the slowest and most labor-intensive part of production. The industry still lacks efficient solutions to streamline these aspects, which could help in maintaining consistent product quality and improving overall production efficiency.

Partnership with Urban Outfitters

Bard also highlighted a significant development for his consumer-facing business, DaySavers, which has recently partnered with the popular retailer Urban Outfitters. This collaboration involves selling 10-packs of artisan tubes and DaySavers’ Perfect Pack filling machine, which has reportedly been well-received by consumers. The partnership represents an expansion into the lifestyle and accessories market, aligning with Urban Outfitters’ trend-conscious consumer base.

Commitment to Scientific Research

Further demonstrating a commitment to science and education, DaySavers has joined forces with the Cannabis Research Coalition and The Network of Applied Pharmacognosy to conduct the Science of Smokability study. This extensive research initiative aims to analyze various cultivation and processing metrics to determine the factors that produce the most pleasant and least harmful smoking experience. As part of the study, DaySavers is compensating 200 participants $4.20 each to test free pre-rolls and provide feedback through a qualitative survey. Bard noted that some participant spots are still open, encouraging interested individuals to get involved.

The Ultimate Stoner Dream Job

In a unique marketing and engagement initiative, DaySavers recently launched the “Ultimate Stoner Dream Job,” which garnered an overwhelming response with over 35,000 applicants. The role seeks a content creator specializing in video production to produce engaging entertainment content. Bard mentioned that the search has been narrowed down to a few finalists, indicating a keen interest in tapping into digital content to connect with their audience.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Bard sees potential for further cannabis studies, particularly focusing on vaping products. He emphasizes the value of continued research and development to enhance product safety and consumer experience.

Harrison Bard’s insights shed light on both the challenges and innovative strides within the cannabis industry, highlighting a period of transformation as companies like DaySavers balance quality enhancement, strategic partnerships, and rigorous scientific inquiry.
