Officials with New Brunswick’s Justice Department have announced the largest seizure of illegal cannabis ever recorded in Atlantic Canada, marking a significant blow to unlicensed dispensary networks across the region.

Record-Breaking Seizure

Public Safety Minister Kris Austin revealed that the operation, which took place on August 30, resulted in the confiscation of an assortment of illegal cannabis products. The haul included 432 kilograms of dried cannabis, 8,000 pre-rolled joints, 1,600 edible products, 925 electronic vape products, 540 grams of hashish, and $143,000 in cash. The seizure is believed to be intended for over 30 unlicensed dispensaries operating in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec.

Arrests and Charges

The operation led to the arrest of three individuals: a 53-year-old man from Markham, Ontario, and two people from Scarborough, Ontario—a 45-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man. The trio now faces charges under both the federal Cannabis Act and the Criminal Code.

Minister Austin emphasized the risks associated with illegal cannabis, noting that these products are not regulated and may not meet the strict quality control and labeling standards mandated by the Cannabis Act. This lack of regulation poses potential health risks to users.

“The seizure will disrupt the distribution network of dozens of unlicensed cannabis dispensaries, not only in New Brunswick but throughout Canada,” Austin said in a news release. “This is crucial, as illegal cannabis contributes to and supports organized crime.”
