Police Accuse 70-Year-Old of Operating Illicit Cannabis Grow
70-Year-Old Man Charged After Police Seize 40 Cannabis Plants in Hay River
Police in Hay River have charged a 70-year-old man following the seizure of 40 cannabis plants from his property, marking a significant breach of the Cannabis Act’s regulations.
Discovery and Seizure
In a Monday news release, the RCMP reported that the plants were discovered after police responded to a call at a Hay River home last month. Officers returned to the property on September 6 to conduct a search, where they found and seized 40 cannabis plants. This quantity is notably higher than the legal limit, which permits only four plants per household under the Cannabis Act.
Charges and Court Appearance
The 70-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, faces charges for possessing more than the allowed number of cannabis plants. He is expected to appear in court at a later date to face these charges.
Impaired Driving Incidents
In a separate incident over the past weekend, RCMP in Hay River reported charging three individuals for impaired driving. One of the drivers, who was allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, was also charged with refusing to provide a breath sample.
Community Safety and Legal Compliance
The recent enforcement actions underscore the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to ensure compliance with cannabis regulations and maintain road safety. The RCMP continues to address illegal activities and impaired driving to enhance community safety.
