NFL Revises Substance Abuse Policy: Fines Reduced, THC Threshold Increased

The NFL and its players’ union (NFLPA) have agreed on significant updates to the league’s substance abuse policy, including an increased THC threshold for positive tests. The revisions, outlined in a memo sent to agents and players, mark a shift toward a more lenient and health-focused approach.

The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, revealed that the threshold for a positive THC test has been raised from 150 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) to 350 ng/ml. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana, responsible for its mental effects.

This change reflects evolving attitudes toward marijuana use and aligns with growing legalization trends across the United States.

Simplified Notifications and Focus on Player Privacy

Under the updated policy, teams will only be notified of a penalty and that it resulted from a positive or missed test. The specific substance causing the violation will no longer be disclosed. This adjustment prioritizes player privacy while maintaining accountability for violations.

Additionally, the policy introduces provisions for fentanyl testing when clinically indicated. Positive fentanyl tests will not result in discipline, but players are required to attend mandatory meetings on the matter. Noncompliance with these meetings will incur a $15,000 fine.

Reduced Fines and Reset Opportunities for Missed Tests

Fines for positive tests have been reduced under the revised policy. For instance, the fine for a second missed test has been decreased from the equivalent of one game’s salary to $45,000.

Players with a history of missed tests will benefit from a clean slate: all currently pending discipline for missed tests will be excused, and they will be considered as having no missed tests. Furthermore, the count of missed tests will reset to zero after a designated period without additional violations.

Clarification on Prescription Drug Use

The updated policy also clarifies language concerning the misuse of prescription drugs, ensuring players understand the consequences and guidelines surrounding their proper use.

Players who post recordings of the collection process on social media will face a $15,000 fine. This measure reinforces professionalism and confidentiality during testing procedures.

Tweaks to Performance-Enhancing Substances Policy

Revisions to the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy include extending the testing window from the time of notification to the time of testing. In some cases, suspended players may now be reinstated and eligible for pay even if they test positive after a suspension.
